“Professor Xavier has…” Phil Coulson strolled into the conference room, eyes on the portable screen in his hand. He nearly stumbled when he was bombarded by questions.

“How long were you going to keep this mutant school a secret? Or the existence of mutants in general? What else are you hiding from us? More importantly, someone said I was a mutant? Trust me, I am not a mutant.” Tony had eaten up the story of the school up north for gifted students. Scarlett, Tony, and Bruce had sat in rapt attention as Jinx and Mickey regaled them with stories about mutants and the technology that they’d developed. When Jinx had explained to Tony that his genius was because due to his genetic makeup he had been personally offended and had spoken of nothing else since then.

“It was a need to know thing.” Coulson cleared his throat, tapping the screen of the tablet he held in his hand but the group of scientists and engineers was far from done with him.

“What else around here is need to know, Coulson? First there are other dimensions, other universes, alternate timelines, now there are mutants living here in our world with super powers! Next you’re going to be telling me there are aliens and all that Roswell crap is real.” Tony was joking but then his face turned serious as Coulson stared at him blankly. “There are aliens aren’t there?”

            “Well…”

“Scarlett, there are aliens, what are we supposed to do? How am I supposed to plan against aliens?” Tony turned to her with wide eyes and the brunette held up her hand to stop him from blabbering on about things beyond his control. At once he relaxed but his mind was still reeling. Coulson was impressed, silencing Tony was no mean feat.

“Let’s figure this out one thing at a time.” Scarlett exhaled and the other scientists in the room seemed to calm considerably. “We’ve seen it with our own eyes, portals to other dimensions are in fact possible but let’s consider that perhaps this term ‘other dimensions’ could, in fact, mean different planets. So we could consider Thor and Mitchell both aliens. The existence of aliens is no different than the existence of these other universes. In fact, we could consider Asgard another planet. Thor referred to it as one of the nine realms. What difference does it make what term we use?” Tony and Bruce stared at her with their mouths agape. They’d expected her to help them forget about the confusion not make it worse!

“But how do we know that they’re even from our timeline?” Bruce pinched the bridge of his nose. It was an awful lot of information to swallow. “How many parallel universes are there? Even if we figured out how to chart these universes how would…”

“You opened Pandora’s box.” Natasha stood nearby, arms over her chest, watching the group of scientists as they theorized on how this could all be possible even though they’d seen the proof of it in front of their eyes.

“Do you see why this was only a need to know thing?” Coulson sighed. “What a headache.”

“Stop talking about timelines, time travel is stupid anyway. Can we just deal with our timeline and the monster trying to rip a hole through it?” Scarlett grumbled, resting her head down on the table in front of them.

“How is it stupid? Time travel is not stupid.” Tony argued

“Even if you alter the timeline by going back in time, the originating timeline doesn’t change okay? It’s a paradox, you can’t undo what caused you to travel back in time or you’ll never have traveled! The whole thing is stupid. Stupid!”

“She’s right.” Bruce nodded and Scarlett smiled in thanks.

“Look, I’ll send you files on everything I have access to on the matter of mutants and aliens after this is all over but I need you three to focus on the matter at hand.” Coulson approached the table and tapped the side of it. “Scarlett’s right, time travel isn’t feasible.”

“How does he expect me to think about anything but aliens and time travel now?” Tony whispered to Scarlett who tried not to laugh and gently patted his arm in comfort.

“Try to get it together.” Coulson exhaled deeply and then stopped when another familiar face came into the room. Steve walked over to the table and sat down next to Bruce, brow furrowed. Tony leaned across the table and looked at him seriously.

“Did you know about the mutants? And the aliens?”

“What? No.” Steve shook his head but still seemed shaken and very much not interested in what Tony had to say.

“Then what’s wrong with you?” Scarlett nudged him across the table.

“I just went to a corner of the internet I may never recover from. I miss the 40s.” Steve reclined in his chair and Tony rolled his eyes, doing the same in his.

“Can we get down to business?” Coulson pushed a folder on the table and then acknowledged the screen hanging on the far wall. “Agent Bennett, if you please.”

“He’s the one who got me all riled up about aliens.”

“Tony, not now.” Scarlett whispered to him.

“What, he’s suddenly not a good liar or something? You know as well as I do that he very well could have denied their existence. He did it on purpose. He wants me to suffer.”

“Tony, enough with the aliens. Don’t go all David Duchovny on me.”

“Fine, but we’re not done discussing this or that reference, Gillian.”

“Great.” Scarlett sighed heavily and could have sworn she caught Bruce chuckling out of the corner of her eye.

“Professor Xavier, can you hear me?” Coulson wasn’t going to wait for the class to behave, instead he’d start the conversation by himself. Each member of the team at the tabled turned their gaze at once to the screen on the far wall.

“Loud and clear, Agent Coulson.” An older man, bald, with kind eyes and a polite British accent sat behind a desk on one side of the screen. From the camera they could hear people arguing about whether or not they had the webcam set up correctly. “Is everything alright on your end?”

“Yes, we can see and hear you just fine.” Coulson nodded. “I was just explaining to my team that you may have some insight into our missing girl.”

“Ah, yes, if she was a mutant then I can help you at least a little.” He smiled, though there was something strained behind his eyes.

“Have you ever heard of her? One of the other agents mentioned you could locate mutants with some machine you have up there? Cerebro?” Scarlett spoke because Tony was now whispering with Bruce about the existence of aliens and then arguing with Steve about whether or not he should be paying attention. “Her name is Caitlyn Smothers and she’s from Hamburg, New Jersey… though she spent many years on the streets prior to that so the entire tri-state area really.”

“I’m afraid that I have not heard of her specifically, I’m sorry. There are thousands of people with mutated genetics in the world and it would be impossible for me to remember a single one. But from what Agent Coulson has filled me in on I have some thoughts.”

“Please, share them with us Professor.” Steve stood up from the table, tired of arguing with Tony about what was need to know and who decided that no one else got to know about it. Scarlett tried to calm Tony down but it was clear he needed a real chance to sleep.

“We have a few students here with teleportation powers but from what I can tell nothing as intense as what your Caitlyn has experienced.” The professor seemed distressed by that. “I’ve heard of portals, there are a few on my team that have skills similar to that but again it simply isn’t what you’re dealing with. They transport matter from one location to another in places they were already familiar with. Trust me, no one at my school is releasing any demons. Except for Logan, perhaps.” They heard an objection from who they could only assume was Logan on the other side of the camera. Professor Xavier’s eyes sparkled mischievously and he stifled a quiet laugh.

“How does that help us?” Coulson grimaced.

“Young mutants are often unaware of what powers they have. When they create these… they’d likely tell you they’re problems, they don’t know what they’re doing and are ashamed to share the whole truth. The file you sent me says that this girl was accused of stealing many precious items. My guess is that she was accidentally sending them away with her mutant powers but had no idea that’s what was happening. For all she knew, she thought she had lost them or given them back.”

“That would make sense.” Scarlett grimaced, and from there she was able to put the pieces together. “Wherever she was sending these things, someone had to notice.”

“That’s right. My guess is that something from wherever it is her mutant powers allow her to travel seized opportunity and is now using her gifts in an attempt to travel between the universes. Something is manipulating her insecurity and her fear and using her to travel to our world. Caitlyn is young and unsure of how to use her gifts, it’s possible she doesn’t have the strength to do what this monster wants her to.”

“That’s why these anomalies only occurred in the tri-state area.” Bruce chimed in, looking to Scarlett with concern in his eyes.

“It was the only place she knew.” Tony nodded, finally able to push the alarm bells out of his head so he could focus on the matter at hand. This seemed important to Scarlett. If they solved this crisis then they could go home and sleep. Or fight. Then sleep. Either way, sleep was happening.

“Exactly. Manipulation of this sort is very dangerous.” Professor Xavier leaned closer to the camera and looked to them seriously. “If whatever it is she’s made friends with makes its way over to our world who knows what the consequences could be. Think of it as inviting something foreign into an ecosystem that is unfamiliar with it. The consequences could be drastic.”

“That’s why we’re not going to let it happen.” Bruce smiled resolutely. “Dr. Stark and I have been working on a device that will hopefully be able to keep the portal open long enough for us to retrieve Caitlyn and pull her out of harm’s way while keeping the creature from crossing over.”

“That could work but remember, if Caitlyn isn’t sure how to control her powers then there’s no saying she can’t do it again. Be cautious.”

“We’ve thought of that and we’ve considered tranquilizing her. No consciousness, no portals.” Coulson spoke up and Scarlett scowled.

“Or we could just tell the girl what’s going on and pull her out of harm’s way. She wasn’t stupid and she’s not a baby. She said she wants to go home, she was trying to make it stop.” Scarlett argued and Professor Xavier nodded to agree with her.

“Sedation should be a last resort. What’s to stop her from panicking when she wakes up and the whole phenomenon starting all over again?” Professor Xavier scolded. Coulson shied his eyes away and somehow got the feeling that the professor knew exactly what he would do to prevent that. They had cells specifically made to stop any sort of travel between worlds. After Thor had dropped in on them in New Mexico they’d had no choice but to prepare for how to keep one of these otherworldly creatures held captive.

“Thank you.” Scarlett was glad that someone was with her when it came to dealing with this situation. She was beginning to feel like they were dancing around the idea of killing the girl! It wasn’t Caitlyn’s fault that she’d been lured in by some monster. The poor girl had been through enough without having to fear for her life from the only people who had so far tried to help her escape.

“Is there anything else I can help you with?” Professor Xavier smiled kindly and waited for them.

“Not that I can think of.” Coulson looked to his team who nodded to agree. They’d gotten everything they needed from him. “That’s it. Thank you Professor.”

“May I make one request?” He looked through the camera and seemed to look to Scarlett in particular. This left her feeling unnerved because she was relatively sure that they were not transmitting video on their end. “When you recover this little girl after her ordeal, bring her to me. We can help her understand and control her gifts. We can give her a home and a family.”

“We’ll see what we can do.” Coulson nodded to agree. “Thanks again.” Scarlett turned away from the screen as they wrapped up the formalities of the conversation. Tony was still hung up on the existence of all these beings from other worlds and while Scarlett had initially been overwhelmed by it too she cared less about that and more about what she could control. When she was thrown into another dimension that would be when she would deal with it. It would be impossible to prepare for everything life could throw at them so she wouldn’t let it keep her up at night. However, she might have to do some damage control when it came to Tony. He was already paranoid about their safety as it was. If she came home one day to him wearing a tinfoil hat she wasn’t sure what she’d do.

“I’m not helping you if you’re not going to reach out to Caitlyn as the first and foremost action here. I’m not going at her with a tranquilizer.” Scarlett turned to Coulson as he walked around the other side of the table to be with them. “I’ll work against you if I have to.”

“You do know you signed a contract to work for us, right?” Coulson offered a weak smile and Scarlett shook her head.

“Don’t care. My boyfriend has more lawyers than I knew a person could have so I’d figure out the legalities later.”

“I do.” Tony nodded to confirm that was true. However he wasn’t sure that even his lawyers could talk away anything illegal she would do in order to keep pursuing this girl. The last thing he wanted was for Scarlett to go back on the run, hiding from the law for her crimes against humanity. They were finally making progress on that forefront.

“I think it’s a good idea.” Steve added in when no one else spoke. “Not… Miss Damien going out of her way to sabotage our efforts, but rather reaching out to the little girl. She’s right. Even last night when she appeared to us she was desperate to get away from that creature. She knows she needs help.”

“We can’t rely on the fact that she might be willing to get away. We have to prepare for every avenue.”

“She’s just a kid.” Scarlett argued.

“So? What makes her any different than any of the people on your hit list, huh? Did age really matter back then?”

“I just told you.” Scarlett clenched her jaw and jabbed her fingers against the table. “She’s a kid. I don’t go after kids. Never did. It’s just a shitty thing to do.”

“We do what we have to do in order to keep people safe. If there’s even an iota of a chance that she’s going to summon that thing…”

“You heard Captain Piccard over there, he’s going to help her.” Tony gestured toward the screen that was now dark and blank.

            “And what about until then?”

“We make her feel safe instead of feeling like we’re going to hurt her. I bet you that damn thing promised her family and acceptance. Those drawings?” Scarlett picked up the folder and pulled out the ones they’d retrieved from behind the girl’s bed at the orphanage, slamming them down on the table facing Coulson. “These drawings? She wants to be loved, that’s it. That’s not asking much when you’re fifteen.”

“This is crazy. Of all the people I thought would be on board with this plan and you’re the one fighting me.” Coulson waved at the pictures. “Sedating her won’t hurt her.”

“There’s more of a chance that she’ll react when she wakes up. So what are you going to do? Stick her in some prison cell up north until you can help her control her powers? Why do you get to decide that?”

“Now that we’re on the subject…” Tony interjected, reaching to grab Scarlett’s hand under the table in hopes of providing some kind of comfort. He’d never seen her get so worked up over a stranger before. “What gives you the right to keep any of this a secret?”

“Can you imagine the mass hysteria that would take place if we announced any of what was really going on?” Coulson had argued this a thousand times with Tony Stark and the billionaire had never agreed with him.

“No, I get that. This situation, zip the lip. I got it. But why wouldn’t you allow us to believe in other dimensions? What harm is that going to do on a day to day basis? Scientists bust their asses all their lives to find this sort of discovery so what happens when they do? You silence them? Then people like me… I could be of help here, you know I could and instead you keep it hidden from the very people who could provide the very understanding you hope to have.”

“We are not getting into this now, Stark. There’s no time.” Coulson rapped his knuckles on the table.

“Sedation only as a last resort and I’m the one to do it. Or Clint.” Scarlett gestured to wherever Clint had found himself that morning.

“Clint? Really?” Tony whispered and Scarlett squeezed his hand to quiet him for the time being.

“Fine.” Coulson finally agreed though it looked as though he had a headache after all the arguing. They’d all been awake too long and there was little they could do at the time being. “How’s the prototype coming, Dr. Banner? You mentioned something to Professor Xavier about it and you sounded fairly confident in the fact that it would work.”

“We’ve spent all night and all morning working on it. It’s as good as it’s going to get. We won’t know if it’ll work or not until after we’re able to get out there with it in the field. Miss Mitchell didn’t want us to test it on her and I can’t rightly blame her. Thor did his best but his powers don’t work the same way.”

            “That’s reassuring.” Natasha muttered.

“I’m confident that it’s going to work this time.” Bruce smiled politely at Natasha who nodded and backed off. If he said it would work, then she would trust him.

“There’s nothing left to do but keep an eye out for another anomaly. Unless you think there’s a way you can trigger it?” Coulson wondered what else they had discovered and had neglected to tell him. Tony was the type to do just that but Bruce had more of an honest streak than Tony had and he was hoping that wouldn’t be the case.

“I thought about that but when Dr. Stark and I looked over the numbers it didn’t seem feasible. It’s like trying to predict when someone’s going to show up without being called. For all we know that thing is sleeping. Or eating.” Bruce curled his lip in disgust as he considered what that might look like. “Traveling through that portal has to take a toll on him, it’s obvious.”

“That’s what I thought. Thank you for being honest with me.” Coulson gave Tony a look and Tony narrowed his eyes in return. He’d always pushed Coulson’s buttons but in a way he was keeping him honest. It was odd that Agent Coulson felt guilty about keeping these things secret from them. He agreed with Tony about many of the points he’d made but protocol was just that and there was nothing he could do to change it.

“So, now what? We just sit around until something happens? Is that standard S.H.I.E.L.D. protocol?” Scarlett let go of Tony’s hand and got out of her chair. Sitting was driving her nuts. She wanted to do something. Maybe she could find this girl herself? She’d start from the place she disappeared and travel until she found her. Then there was that tricky bit about her being in another dimension. Maybe Scarlett could find a way there. Mitchell couldn’t travel to this place, she’d explained earlier that it was more complex than that and besides she was as trapped here as the rest of those mere mortals were.

“I recommend everyone go home and get some sleep. It’s been a long few days and there’s much more to be done before we can fully relax. I need you all in tip top shape when the time comes.”
“I doubt I’m going to be able to sleep after all this excitement.” Jinx commented from the back of the room. Much to her surprise person after person agreed with her vocally.

“You expect us to just sit around waiting? Really? Napping is your solution?” Tony scoffed. “Do I get a juice box too?”

“I’m with them, surprisingly. I think we should at the very least be together and ready to deploy when the time comes.” Steve nodded, getting to his feet with the others.

“If none of you are going to give into your body’s basic needs then I suggest that you at least do something to take it easy. At least eat something.” Coulson looked behind him to where Mickey had entered the room. “Agent Pierce, go retrieve the others please.”

“They’re already here. I filled them in on the way.” Mickey held open the door and allowed Clint, Thor, Mitchell, and Daniel into the conference room.

“Coulson wants us to go take a nap. I warn you, I like to be the big spoon.” Tony spoke before the lead agent got a chance to and again Coulson winced.

“Really? This hardly seems like the time for rest.” Thor furrowed his brow. “There is much to do!”

“I can’t believe I’m saying this but I’m with Captain Rainbow over here.” Tony walked around the table and patted Steve hard on the back. “We should stick together until the alert goes off. If all we can do is wait for the anomaly to occur then we should be ready when it does. Napping in our own respective homes doesn’t make sense. By the time we jump to action it’ll be too late.”

“Fine, I’ll leave this conference room at your disposal.” Coulson didn’t care where they were as long as they were ready to get into the air when the time came.

“Not here, sorry. Somewhere a bit closer to my home I think. We need a change of scenery. I’ll have Jarvis tap into Dr. Banner’s search and we can grab a bite to eat. There’s this restaurant underground at Water and Wall. They love me there. Great bar… My treat. It’s a little pricy, so I wouldn’t expect anyone else to pay for it.” Tony added in with a wink.

“Fine, do what you will. Natasha, you’re in charge of the jet. Make sure it’s prepped before you go anywhere. “Agent Pierce?” Mickey roused from her reverie as Coulson addressed her. She’d been wondering whether or not this weird dinner party included her. It wasn’t like she was an official member of their team; she’d simply been in the right place at the right time thus far.

            “Yes, sir?”

“See what you can do about our Asgardian friend here. He can’t walk around the streets of Manhattan wearing a full suit of armor and a cape, now can he?” Coulson nodded. Mickey’s face turned red and her eyes went wide.

“I understand that is not your usual dress in your land. I suppose it wouldn’t be a good idea to fly about either. I learned my lesson well enough upon my last visit.” Thor sighed. How did Midgardians get around from day to day without using any of the skills he’d gotten so used to over the years? It all seemed very tedious.

“Probably a good idea.” Coulson couldn’t help but laugh. Manhattan was the type of city where weird things happened. There was a phrase that even New Yorkers used on a daily basis: Only in Manhattan. And it was true. At any given time on any given street corner something odd was happening and the residents generally overlooked it because it’d become commonplace. However, a man flying through the sky with a hammer and a cape would be something that they’d notice and likely report.

“But… I, umm… how on earth do I…?” Mickey stuttered, her face still red, completely flustered. Jinx was hiding her face behind her computer screen but everyone could hear her giggling at the expense of her friend. Tony rolled his eyes. What was the big deal? So what, Thor was handsome. So was he! Why was everyone getting so flustered over the new guy?

Wait, was everyone getting flustered over the new guy. Tony’s eyes flickered to Scarlett and then to Mickey. Then he made it back to Thor and saw that the man was not at all confused by Mickey’s reaction. Clearly he was used to women finding him attractive and suddenly Tony didn’t think it was all that funny anymore. That was the look he usually wore.

“Look, I have a guy.” Tony walked over to Mickey and after digging through his wallet pulled out a business card. “He’s a tailor. Tell him it’s for me and he’ll call to confirm it. Bring the big lug there and tell him he needs something nice to wear. Something with a few less bells and whistles if Conan the Barbarian is alright with that.”

“Does he mean me? I am no barbarian.” Thor looked to Steve who shrugged, just as unsure as he was.

“Yes, he means you.” Scarlett walked past Thor, patting him on the shoulder and then headed over to Tony. “Really? We’re all just going to meet for drinks and lunch? This is a stupid idea. We should stay here. Keep working. Maybe we can refine the search…”

“We’ve done everything we can.” Even Bruce seemed weary. Scarlett had been so swept up in their new discovery she hadn’t seen the effect the lack of sleep had on the others.  Not everyone was as used to being up all night as her and Tony had been for so long.

“It’ll be good to eat something and maybe rest if we can. That way when this happens, we’re all in our right mind.” Clint reassured her and finally she relented. This was a terrible idea, Scarlett knew it. They were going to sit around and socialize while there were lives at stake? It seemed awfully petty. Working alone had always meant Scarlett could exhaust herself until she felt the need to rest or until her body forced it upon her but now when she was working with a team she had to rely on them to keep going.

“Stark, you were called?” Thor stood up from his chair, towering over each of them. He held his hand out to shake Tony’s who did so reluctantly.

“You can call me Tony, big guy.”

“And you can call me Thor. I think you were misled, my name is not Conan.” He nodded resolutely. “Thank you for your assistance and generosity. Miss Scarlett?” Thor turned to face her and she looked surprised, obviously lost in her own thoughts. “We will put a stop to this.” He smiled reassuringly and then looked to Mickey who was still red in the face. “Come now, Miss Pierce. We have much to do.”

“We’ll meet up with you guys. Wall and Water? Not too far from here.” Clint pointed in the general direction of Manhattan outside of the S.H.I.E.L.D. building.

“Not far at all. I’ll call ahead.” Tony watched as they filed out of the room and then looked to Scarlett. “Want to stop back at home and get changed before we head over?”

“Do I smell or something?” Scarlett looked down at herself and saw that she, in fact, wasn’t looking her best. If she kept her jacket on then it’d be fine but maybe she did need to change.

“No, I just thought that maybe since you’ve been wearing that for over twenty four hours you might want to… freshen up or something? Sometimes the world looks a bit brighter in a new set of clothing.” Tony was oddly peppy for someone past the point of exhaustion.

“Yeah, probably a good idea then.” Scarlett relented.

“I’ll have Happy come pick us up.” Tony began fiddling with his phone. Scarlett was going to suggest they could walk or take the subway but knew that Tony would argue against it so she didn’t want to waste her breath. They walked out of the conference room and down the hall.

“Scarlett, can I have a word quickly?” Natasha left the room after them and nodded for her to come back. Reassuring Tony she’d meet him outside, Scarlett left his side and walked over to her much shorter friend. Once the others were out of earshot she spoke. “What’s up with you lately?”

“Nothing.” Scarlett cocked a curious eyebrow.

“Why are you lying to me?”

            “I’m not lying.”

“A liar knows a lie when she sees one.” Natasha folded her arms over her chest. Her friend was obviously going through something. The Black Widow wanted to help Scarlett, to keep her from going down the same dark road she’d traversed when she’d first joined S.H.I.E.L.D. but if Scarlett wasn’t going to be honest with her there was nothing she could do.

“It’s nothing.” Scarlett ran her fingers through her hair and then turned back to Natasha, checking to make sure no one was around her first. “Can you keep a secret?”

            “I sure hope so.”

“I don’t think this S.H.I.E.L.D. gig is going to work for me. It’s not my scene.”

“No?” Natasha was disappointed but not surprised. “Give it some time, you might change your mind.”

“We’ll talk later.” Scarlett retrieved her phone from her pocket and showed her the message from Tony.

            “Your boyfriend is really needy.”

“Less than you think. Just impatient.” Scarlett nudged Natasha’s arm. “See you at dinner… lunch, whatever this is, I guess.”

“Seems weird, right?” Natasha continued speaking even as Scarlett turned to walk away. “That everyone can just turn off their minds and go celebrate? Cold, right?”

            “Who am I to judge?”

“This is different from what you used to do, Scarlett.”

“I know that, Tasha.” Scarlett nodded but didn’t offer any reassurances. “We’ll talk later.” Natasha watched Scarlett walk down the hall suspiciously. How long would her promises of talking later last? Natasha had always been good at reading people, it was what made her so good at her job, but even now as she watched Scarlett hurry down the hall she wasn’t sure what was going on behind her blue eyes. Something very complex was building in Scarlett’s mind and Natasha wanted to know what it was.

Whether Scarlett was going to melt down or build something great from the carnage in her mind, Natasha was going to be a part of it.
